Welcome!

Welcome to the Pine-Richland High School Symposium website for 2011!  Every year, the Pine-Richland High School hosts a “Symposium.”  The Symposium is a two-day, student-led discussion where students can go to learn more about important contemporary issues.  The purpose of the Symposium is to enlighten students on key issues and current events, introduce multiple perspectives on one topic of discussion and allow students to express their opinions in an open discussion among other students.  The theme of this year’s Symposium is “Global Issues and Awareness.”  In order to create some common points of discussion, the supporting teachers have suggested a few readings.  The selected readings are as follows:

Niccolò Machiavelli’s The Prince

Timothy Creswell’s “Reading ‘Global Sense of Place’”

David Thompson’s “Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis: Worlds Shaped by Words”

Kurt Love’s “Being Critically Literate in Science”

Betty Smith’s A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Links to these readings can be found on the “Readings” page.

In order to show the successes of the past Symposiums, pictures from the 2010 Pine-Richland High School Symposium have been uploaded and can be found on the “Photos” page.

Finally, if you would like to contact us in any way, information about getting in-touch has been posted on the “Contact Us” page.

We hope that this site can be useful by providing further information on the Symposium!  More information (such as dates and programs) will be available in late March!  Please check back for updates!

Thank you!
